Arsti poeg. Õppis filoloogiat Zürichis, Münchenis ja Freiburgis. Oli koduõpetaja Regensburgis, seejärel õpetaja Viljandis Schmidti koolis 1869–1870, teaduslik õpetaja 1871–1873 ja vanemõpetaja 1873–1878 Kuramaal Liepājas (vanad keeled). 1874 abiellus Julie Louise Hackeliga (⚭ vkj. 21. VI 1874 Liepājas). 1879–1883 oli Viljandis Liivimaa maagümnaasiumi vanade keelte vanemõpetaja, 1883–1892 direktor.
