In July, the Department of Folkloristics is hosting visiting researcher Bernie Poikāne, a filmmaker from the University of Grenoble Alpes.
She is preparing her new project in Tartu and on Saaremaa Island. Bernie’s film experiments combine documentary with fiction and folklore.
Exploring boundaries has played an important role in her work—through various optical illusions as well as by examining the edges of fantasy.
She has stated that it is important to get closer to tenderness, melancholy, and monstrosity. Her new project maps the distinctive features and essence of the Saaremaa werewolf.
Anaya Reti (Paris, INALCO) is involved in preparing the theoretical part of the cycle on contemporary calendar holidays. Anaya assists with fieldwork, and also contributes by writing, translating, and editing.
