This text is a keynote lecture I gave for the fifth edition of the Plotting Poetry Conference, held in Tartu, Estonia on July 5, 2022. It is meant to be heard, rather than read, and I hope you will do your best to imagine it as speech rather than writing. The ideas set forth in this piece are heavily entwined with the voice as medium. As such, I have consciously avoided converting this talk into a more standard academic article.
